Buried Pipelines

Corrosion Protection for Buried Pipelines

Protecting buried pipelines from corrosion is essential to ensure long-term performance, reduce maintenance costs, and prevent environmental risks. With decades of experience, we provide tailored corrosion protection solutions that extend pipeline lifespan and secure reliable operations.

Why are underground pipelines exposed to corrosion?

Buried steel pipelines for the transport of gases, crude oil, brine, and chemicals must be cathodically protected against corrosion according to technical regulations and laws. The cathodic protection process is also used to enhance the operational reliability and economy of gas distribution networks and remote pipelines for water and heating. Special measures are necessary for connecting pipes and fittings that transport electrolytically conductive media or are located in an electrolyte (soil, water, clay, concrete).

Water pipelines and district cooling/heating systems are three common pipeline areas that are often severely affected by corrosion. Corrosion Group AB has been designing and delivering complete protection for these types of pipelines with successful results for the past 35 years.

Cathodic Protection - A Necessity for Long-Term Operational Reliability

Cathodic protection is a cornerstone of the strategy to ensure long-term operational reliability for infrastructures exposed to corrosive environments. The use of cathodic protection minimizes the risk of unexpected downtime, costly maintenance actions, and potentially catastrophic failures caused by corrosion damage. By applying a controlled protective current to the metal being protected, cathodic protection ensures that the facility's critical components maintain their durability over time.

By preventing corrosion damage, the lifespan of facilities is extended, reducing the need for frequent repairs or costly total replacements. This results in significant cost savings over time, making the investment in cathodic protection an economically beneficial measure while also benefiting the environment.

Advantages by applying cathodic protection

The greatest benefit of protecting pipelines from corrosion is the environmental gain of avoiding unnecessary production of new materials. Additionally, there are multiple advantages directly impacting your organization’s budget and planning, including reduced maintenance costs and extended asset lifespan.

Advantages

  • Protect more than 10 km of buried pipes with one small anode bed
  • Economical, just a fraction of the costs compared to newbuild
  • Long design life, 30-40 years
  • No more corrosion related leakage
  • Environmentally friendly

Application areas

  • Gas pipelines
  • Water pipelines and distribution networks
  • Sewage pipelines
  • Protection pipes

We have over 35 years of experience protecting underground pipelines from corrosion. Our expertise ensures long-term durability, reduced maintenance costs, and reliable performance in even the most challenging environments.

Cathodic Protection

Cathodic protection is a proven solution for mitigating corrosion in buried pipelines. By applying either sacrificial anodes or ICCP systems, the pipeline’s integrity is safeguarded, significantly extending its operational lifespan.

Sacrificial Anodes

Sacrificial anodes provide a cost-effective method for protecting buried pipelines by gradually corroding themselves to prevent corrosion of the pipeline. This passive system is reliable and requires periodic inspection to maintain efficiency.

Education

We offer comprehensive training in corrosion protection for engineers and field personnel working with buried pipelines. Our programs include both theoretical and practical sessions, available digitally and on-site, to ensure participants gain the skills needed to implement and maintain effective corrosion protection systems.
