Cathodic Protection

Cathodic Protection for Water and Wastewater Pipelines

Reduce leakage risk and extend the service life of critical water infrastructure

Corrosion on water and wastewater pipelines can lead to recurring leaks, emergency repairs, operational disruptions and high life-cycle costs. With the right combination of cathodic protection, coating and regular inspection, the service life of existing steel pipelines, fittings and other exposed structures can be significantly extended.

Corrosion Group has worked with cathodic protection since 1989 and supports municipalities, water utilities, consultants and contractors with design, materials, installation, measurements and training.
Cathodic protection for pipelines
User case:
NODRA’s Eriksberg water pipeline in Norrköping is a strong example of how cathodic protection can preserve critical water infrastructure. After installing the NoCor® cathodic protection system on a 580-meter ductile iron pipeline, no corrosion-related leaks have occurred. The result is increased reliability, extended service life and a significant reduction in both maintenance needs and environmental impact.

Sacrificial anodes for water pipelines and fittings

Cathodic protection using sacrificial anodes is a robust and proven solution for many types of buried pipelines and local repairs. It is commonly used to protect fittings, flanges, valves, leak pits or shorter pipeline sections where soil conditions are suitable.

Magnesium anodes are often used in soil because they have a high driving voltage and can provide effective protection even in more high resistivity environments. To ensure proper performance, the anodes must be dimensioned based on factors such as pipeline material, coating, exposed steel surface area, soil resistivity and desired service life.

For larger pipeline systems, longer distances or installations where the protection needs to be adjustable and monitored, an impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system may be a better alternative.

Impressed current cathodic protection, ICCP

ICCP is often used when the protected structure requires a higher or more controlled protective current than sacrificial anodes can provide.

An ICCP system normally consists of a rectifier, anodes, reference electrodes, cables and monitoring points. The system can be adjusted and monitored over time, making it suitable for larger pipeline systems, complex installations or assets where long-term verification is important.

ICCP can also be combined with remote monitoring, allowing operators to follow the performance of the system and identify deviations before they become critical.

Cathodic protection during leaks and repairs

When a pipeline has already suffered a leak, the repair excavation offers an important opportunity to improve the long-term corrosion protection of the area.

Instead of only repairing the damaged section and closing the excavation, cathodic protection can be installed locally around the repaired area, fittings or exposed steel components. This can reduce the risk of returning to the same location later for another corrosion-related failure.

This approach is especially relevant for older steel or cast iron pipelines, recurring leakage areas and locations where previous coating or corrosion damage has been identified.

We support cathodic protection for:

  • buried steel pipelines
  • water and wastewater pipelines
  • fittings, flanges and valves
  • leak repair excavations
  • pump stations and treatment plants
  • tanks, basins and steel structures in water environments
  • temporary protection during repair or reconstruction
  • areas with recurring corrosion-related leakage
  • And more!

A reliable cathodic protection system requires more than simply installing anodes. The system must be designed based on the actual conditions of the structure and the surrounding environment.

We can support with:

  • review of drawings and technical documentation
  • soil resistivity measurements
  • potential measurements
  • current demand calculations
  • anode selection and positioning
  • material supply
  • installation guidance
  • commissioning and control measurements
  • follow-up inspections and service

  1. We review drawings, material data, coating information and site conditions.
  2. We assess corrosion risk, soil conditions and current demand.
  3. We design the cathodic protection solution and define suitable materials.
  4. We provide documentation, installation guidance and product supply.
  5. We verify the system through measurements and follow-up inspections.
