Sacrificial Anodes

Corrosion and Sacrificial Anodes

The three main materials used for sacrificial anodes are:
  • Zink
  • Aluminium
  • Magnesium

How do sacrificial anodes work?

Sacrificial anodes are made from specialized metal alloys designed to prevent corrosion by protecting the metal structures they are attached to. These alloys, often developed by the U.S. military, are commonly labeled with US-MIL specifications (primarily for aluminum and zinc).

Sacrificial anodes function by having a more negative electrochemical potential than the metal they protect. This causes the anode to corrode (or "sacrifice" itself) instead of the protected metal, thereby creating a protective current. For this reason, they are called "sacrificial anodes." To maintain their effectiveness, sacrificial anodes should be periodically inspected, and the protected structures should undergo regular potential testing.

Applications of Sacrificial Anodes

Each material; zinc, aluminum, or magnesium - has its own strengths and weaknesses and should be evaluated based on the specific use case. When selecting sacrificial anodes for protecting ships, barges, or other submerged structures, several factors must be considered, such as water type, temperature, and salinity.

Factors to Consider

  • Type of vessel
  • Water resistivity
  • Current demand
  • Surface area
  • Operating environment
  • Maintenance schedule

Application Areas

  • Ship hulls
  • Ballast tanks
  • Propellers
  • Rudders
  • Sea chests
  • Cooling systems

Cathodic Protection

Cathodic protection is a proven method for preventing corrosion on ships by making the protected metal the cathode in an electrochemical cell. This is achieved through sacrificial anodes or ICCP systems, ensuring long-term protection of critical structures.

Galvanic Corrosion

Galvanic corrosion occurs when two dissimilar metals come into contact in a conductive environment, such as seawater. Proper material selection and the use of cathodic protection systems are essential to mitigate this type of corrosion on ships.

Projecting

Accurate projecting is crucial for designing effective corrosion protection systems tailored to a vessel's specific structure and operational conditions. By carefully analyzing requirements, we ensure optimal performance and durability of the ship’s protective systems.
