Propeller Shaft Grounding

Why Propeller Shaft Grounding is Crucial

A ship's propeller is insulated from the hull due to the lubricating oil film in the bearings. This insulation creates a potential difference between the shaft and the hull, which the ship's cathodic protection system (ICCP or galvanic anodes) cannot address. As a result, electrical currents can form, leading to pitting corrosion in the bearings and the propeller, causing damage and expensive repairs.

How Shaft Grounding Systems Prevent Corrosion

By installing a shaft grounding system, the electrical isolation between the shaft and the hull is eliminated. This system ensures a direct electrical path, allowing the propeller to be integrated into the ship’s cathodic protection system. This prevents stray currents from causing corrosion, extending the life of the propeller and bearings. Additionally, it improves overall ship efficiency by reducing maintenance costs and preventing unplanned downtime.
