Corrosion poses a significant challenge in the process industry, where complex systems and environments increase the risk of damage to pipes, tanks, and other equipment. Sacrificial anodes, made from specially developed metal alloys such as aluminum and zinc, play a crucial role in cathodic protection. These alloys often adhere to US-MIL standards, originally developed for the American military, ensuring high reliability and performance in harsh conditions.

Sacrificial anodes have a more negative electrochemical potential than the metal they are designed to protect. By sacrificing themselves through the release of a protective current, they prevent corrosion of critical components.

Refineries often encounter corrosion problems both above and below ground. Below ground, a good coating and effective cathodic corrosion protection are usually sufficient. Above ground, more specific coating solutions are often required to meet the needs for full corrosion protection of pipelines.

Materials vary between protected objects and the current environment, but common materials include ICCP anodes (MMO, Titanium, Silicon Iron).
