ICCP anodes engineered for advanced cathodic protection

ICCP - Impressed Current Cathodic Protection

Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) is an active corrosion protection method that uses an external power source to supply a controlled protective current to a metal structure. The system can be monitored and adjusted to provide the required level of protection, making ICCP particularly suitable for large structures and applications with high or varying current demands.

Key features of ICCP:

  • Controlled current output
  • High current capacity
  • Long service life
  • Effective protection over large areas
  • Flexible system design

About ICCP

Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) uses an external DC power source, typically a transformer rectifier, to supply protective current to a metal structure. Unlike galvanic cathodic protection, which relies on sacrificial anodes, ICCP systems typically use low-consumption anodes designed to provide protection over a long service life.

One of the key advantages of ICCP is the ability to control and adjust the protective current. This allows the system to be adapted to the specific requirements of the structure and to changing operating or environmental conditions. ICCP can also provide a significantly higher current output than galvanic systems, making it particularly suitable for large structures or applications with high current demands.

Typical applications include pipelines, storage tanks, marine vessels, offshore structures and other large steel structures. When properly designed, monitored and maintained, an ICCP system can provide reliable corrosion protection over many years while reducing the need for anode replacement.

The flexibility of ICCP allows systems to be designed for a wide range of structures and environments. By controlling corrosion and extending the service life of existing assets, ICCP can also help reduce material consumption, replacement needs and the long-term costs associated with corrosion damage.

When to Choose ICCP

ICCP is an effective solution for structures that require a high or adjustable protective current, or where galvanic anodes may not provide sufficient protection. The system can be designed and controlled to meet the specific requirements of the structure, environment and operating conditions.

ICCP is particularly suitable when:

  • Protecting large or complex structures with high current requirements
  • Protection levels need to be adjusted as operating or environmental conditions change
  • Operating in high-resistivity environments where galvanic anodes may provide insufficient current
  • Protecting extensive infrastructure such as pipelines, storage tanks, marine vessels and offshore structures

Application Areas for ICCP

Marine & Offshore

  • Ships and vessels
  • Offshore platforms
  • Port and harbour structures
  • Floating structures
  • Offshore wind foundations

Pipelines & Infrastructure

  • Buried pipelines
  • Subsea pipelines
  • Storage tanks
  • Water pipelines
  • Large steel structures

Canister anodes

Canister anodes are a critical component in impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems, particularly for buried or submerged structures. Encased in protective canisters filled with special backfill materials, these anodes ensure efficient current distribution and enhanced system durability. Their robust design makes them suitable for harsh environments, offering reliable performance for pipelines, tanks, and other industrial applications.

Silicon cast iron anodes

Silicon cast iron anodes are widely used in ICCP systems due to their high conductivity and exceptional resistance to corrosion. Their durability and cost-effectiveness make them ideal for long-term protection in demanding environments, such as offshore platforms, marine structures, and water treatment facilities. These anodes are designed to provide consistent performance while minimizing system maintenance.

ICCP system

Impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems are an advanced solution for combating corrosion on metal structures. By applying a controlled electrical current through anodes, ICCP systems neutralize the electrochemical reaction causing corrosion. They are highly versatile and can be tailored to protect large-scale infrastructure such as ships, storage tanks, pipelines, and offshore platforms. ICCP systems offer long-term protection, reducing maintenance costs and extending the service life of critical assets.
