Reinforced Concrete

Cathodic Corrosion Protection for Concrete

Cathodic Corrosion Protection for Concrete

Corrosion of metal structures in concrete is rooted in the characteristics of the concrete itself. The factors of greatest importance are porosity, the absence of cracks, and the thickness of the concrete layer over the metal. Typically, with good concrete quality and adequate thickness, the reinforcement becomes passivated and does not corrode, or corrodes very slowly.

Insufficient thickness and density of the concrete, combined with other factors such as salt, saltwater, and pollutants, can break the passivity of the reinforcement, leading it to begin corroding. This can be effectively prevented with cathodic corrosion protection.

Ensuring Long-Term Durability

Concrete is a key material in a wide range of projects, from infrastructure to industrial applications. Choosing the right corrosion protection requires careful consideration of all factors, including environmental conditions, lifespan requirements, and structural demands to ensure long-term durability and performance

Application areas

  • Bridges
  • Capping beams
  • Quay structures
  • Cooling water tunnels
  • Large foundations
  • Parking garages
  • Water & Sewage
  • Marine structures

Materials

  • Varies depending on the object
  • Commonly used: Titanium anodes

The problem

- The Corrosion Challenge

Corrosion significantly impacts reinforced concrete structures, reducing their strength and lifespan. Exposure to moisture and chlorides leads to rapid deterioration, increasing maintenance COSTs and safety risks. Without preventive measures, structural integrity weakens, potentially resulting in costly repairs or failures.
In addition to this, endless concrete repairs usually accelerate the corrosion rate due to increased oxygen levels at the repaired area. Effective corrosion control, such as cathodic protection, is crucial to preserving infrastructure, reducing long-term costs, and ensuring safety and reliability.

The solution

- Effective Corrosion Control

Cathodic protection stops steel reinforcement from corroding by controlling electrochemical reactions. Our ICCP and sacrificial anode systems:

- Preserve structural integrity and extend lifespan
- Prevent costly, repeated repairs
- Enhance safety and reliability
- Reduce lifetime maintenance costs
- Extends the design life by up to 10 times
